Message from Catherine Schenk, President of the Economic History Society

As we come to the day when we should have been starting our Annual Conference, I wanted to send the Society’s good wishes to our members. We are all missing the inspiring research from the New Researchers’ sessions and the pleasure of choosing among hundreds of presentations of new research across our discipline. Perhaps we will most miss getting to know new colleagues and greeting old friends that we might not meet from one year to the next.
The Conference is a wonderful opportunity to take stock of the state of the art in economic and social history and I suggest that you take some time over the next few days to access the Conference Booklet, which includes 5-8 page summaries of all New Researchers’ papers and one-page abstracts of the main academic papers. We can still share ideas and work in progress and I encourage you to open conversations with the authors.
This is a challenging time for us all and the Society’s Executive is actively considering how it can marshal its resources to support the discipline and researchers across their careers through the current crisis. Our AGM will take place, virtually, at 14:00 on Tuesday 19 May 2020 and I hope many of you will take part as we reflect on the Society’s activities over the past year and elect new officers. More information, including nstructions on how to attend, can be found here.
I would like to send my personal best wishes to members and their families and loved ones, and look forward to meeting you again next year at the University of Warwick, where the conference will take place on 9-11 April 2021. Further information can be found here.
