People, Markets, Goods: Economies and Societies in History
The series was initiated by Professor Nigel Goose, who will step down as chair of the Publications Committee at the annual conference in York in April 2013. Professor Goose will edit the series along with Professor Jane Humphries, President of the Society 2010-13, Professor Kevin O’Rourke, Oxford University’s Chichele Professor of Economic History and Professor Steve Hindle, a former editor of the Economic History Review.
It aims to attract historians and social scientists with an interest in historical approaches by publishing high quality, cutting edge academic research in the broad field of economic and social history from the late medieval/early modern period to the present day. It will encourage the interaction of qualitative and quantitative methods through both excellent monographs and collections offering path-breaking overviews of key research concerns. Taking as its benchmark international relevance and excellence, it is open to scholars and subjects of any geographical areas from the case study to the multi-nation comparison.
Society President Jane Humphries commented that "This initiative by the Society in partnership with Boydell and Brewer aims to produce affordable monographs that will bring high quality research to a wide audience"; Nigel Goose adding that "the series is both testimony to the popular appeal of our subject area and designed to develop that appeal further".
The first volume in the series, Landlords and Tenants in Britain, 1440-1660: Tawney's Agrarian Problem Revisited, edited by Jane Whittle, will be published in summer 2013. Boydell and Brewer will be sponsoring a reception at the York conference before the Conference Dinner to launch the venture.
